Summer 2016 and reflecting on some things from the past, audio files and more...

16/6/2016

Hi everybody! The spring this year just seemed to pass so fast one couldn't even quite notice it..
Now it's already June - sorry for not keeping updated with my blog! I will try to manage it better from now on... Anyways - I was doing some cleaning in my study, and came up with a CD from 2006 that brought in a lot of memories. Also from 2007 I found a funny little audio file, more about those later in this blog. And the reason why I was going through my study (except for cleaning) for that I was trying to find another little, un-official recording, and I did found it eventually. So some excerpts here below..

Right at the moment it's raining dogs and cats here in Helsinki, but we already had quite a few really nice days of summer. Just hope that wasn't the 'summer' for this year! :) But in any case I'll be heading to Italy soon again with my sweet kids Milo and Lumi, and we'll spend some quality time over there. I'll also be playing a bit here and there along the trip - I'll post the details soon!

It has always been a pleasure playing with my friend, pianist Francesco Negro from Maglie, Puglia. Here is a couple of photos from a duo concert with him. Photos by Andrea Rizzo. I'm looking forward to playing with Francesco again this summer!

Now, going back to the past for a second.. The CD I mentioned about is here below.

New York, 2006, E.S.T. and IAJE

Picture
As you noticed, it's the infamous E.S.T. - Esbjörn Svensson Trio's EP recording. The track 'The Unstable Table and The Infamous Fable' was a live take  from Berlin, and the same tune can be found on the 'Viaticum' CD (Act, 2005). Most of you probably know about the horribly sad and very untimely passing of Esbjörn himself (the pianist). But why this brought me memories was, that I happened to be at the IAJE Conference in New York, which this recording is also advertising (as part of their North-American Tour). This concert was on January 13th, 2006 at Hotel Hilton Ballroom, and it was a very powerful and genuinely moving one! People (the audience) seemed to be in some sort of half-trance, and the music just kept going and going. And although I cannot be said being a huge fan of so-called Nordic Jazz (if that exists as a style - worth another full conversation!), or at least I'm not preferring it to any other jazz 'style', I have to say that the band was really happening! The trio members could really read each other's minds, and they had played together A LOT, which is always the thing to strive for! There's so many things about music that cannot be rehearsed or 'practiced' - you just have to do it, over and over again. We all know how much and how hard Trane worked - and the results of it. And although the world has changed, and that kind of opportunities (several weeks long appearances in clubs, for example) don't really exist anymore, it is always a healthy thing to put yourself in a situation where you just play with other people, more or less on a daily basis!

China, Korea, 2007

This next memory takes me back to China, in the Province of Shanghai in 2007. I was playing with my group (with Samuli Mikkonen on piano, Fernando Huergo on bass, and Ville Pynssi on drums) on 'Water Village Music Festival' as part of our tour in China and Korea. Unfortunately I cannot remember the Chinese name of that marvellous place anymore, but was like a miniature Chinese Venice, with hundreds of small bridges and houses by the water. They had a male choir at the opening gala (which was televised), along with all the bands performing at that event, and at some point I was asked to join the Chinese male choir in their performance, for one song. I couldn't refuse naturally, but - just to give a little BG info - the average age of the choir was well over 80, probably 90, and naturally none of them spoke one word of English. Also they didn't read music, but just did their own Work Songs like they have been sung for probably hundreds of years (strangely similar by the way, with their American counterparts, at least by the mood. If you check the Alan Lomax files, you can hear of course a lot of different-sounding takes under 'Work Songs' but there certainly is a noticeable similarity here!).

So - there was I standing, with the TV cameras rolling and the audience waiting - and this soloist of the choir, Mr. Yang just started singing (the idea was to have some kind of musical communication going on) and I was supposed to play with him. Well, it was an experience at least! And a very memorable one. Here below you can hear how it came out (a raw take from the TV clip, no mix).
The concerts we did in Korea were at the Jarasum Jazz Festival and also at the Spring Hall in Seoul. That was my first visit in Korea and the experience was super positive! The audiences were just marvellous and we were taken good care of.

Holland, 2015 fall

I will post later some more files and videos from the past. There is actually quite a lot of stuff waiting to be 'let out' at some point! :)
Anyhow, this next little sample is from my visit at the Royal Conservatory in Den Hague, Netherlands last October. I played a couple of concerts with the Big Band and they recorded the first one (probably the second one would have been better, btw) so here below you can find Frank Foster's 'Simone' and Peter Herboltzheimer's 'Modus 2'. The band was conducted by John Ruocco. Again, just a raw mix, not a finalised 'product'..Great thanks to Wouter Turkenburg for the invitation and for being a great host, and thanks to John Ruocco for the inspiration and great stories! It was also wonderful to meet my old friend Jarmo Hoogendijk after so many years, and Nils Fischer! Holland is a wonderful country.

China again, Japan, 2006

For the next samples we go back to year 2006, when I was touring in China and Japan with my group Tube Factory. On that tour the band consisted of Samuli Mikkonen on piano, Lasse Lindgren on bass and André Sumelius on drums. It was a long and quit hard tour - in 4 weeks we had 26 concerts and still traveled quite a bit, although our first commitment in Guangzhou (Kanton) was actually a 9-days-long one in a newly opened club! After Guangzhou we flew to Chengdu which is a wonderful place in the very center of China. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan, and those of you who know well Chinese kitchens, know what it means, in terms of HOT food! Holy cow! But Chengdu was a lovely experience altogether- we performed a few days at the EU-China Parteneriat Fair- all gigs on big stage outdoors. There was one scary incident on this gig as well: one night when we were performing (the audience was mostly rural people- not very familiar with jazz or foreign groups altogether), suddenly a seemingly drugged or otherwise mentally not stable man without any shirt just jumped on stage, right before me. He had a knife in his hand and was probably going to use it - I couldn't even hold my breath, but in the next moment the guards (who were on the stage, I didn't even notice them before this!) just kicked the guy and he fell from the stage down. A second later they had him and took off. We never stopped playing, the same piano solo by Samuli continuying all the time! I think I still have somewhere a video clip of this, will try to find it for the next time!
From Chengdu we continued to Shanghai for a few days' residency at the Shanghai Conservatory, as well as some concerts at the JZ Club, the most serious one of the many Shanghai jazz joints. From there we moved on to Beijing and concerts and master classes in the region, and then for our last stop to Tokyo, Japan, where we stayed for a few days before finally heading home.

Anyways - these two samples below : the first one- Old C - is from our last concert and final set of the tour, at (Tokyo) Shinjuku Pit Inn. We actually had a full recording gear at the club for 2 days, and the recordings were made by the great pianist/sound engineer Ken'ichiro Shinazawa! Maybe I'll release some of those tracks one day...
The second one is from one of those Chengdu concerts - a day-time concert, maybe around 12the day of the tour.
I will try to find some photos from this tour, too!
This last track - that was taken probably from a video cam- so one mic take- was actually released on the Italian 'Jazz Magazine' Sampler, together with stars like the late, great Johnny Griffin, Furio di Castri, Massimo Urbani and Ray Anderson.. A real 'low-fi' one! Here's the cover:
Picture
Finally - thanks so much for reading, and hopefully at least some of you had the patience to listen to those samples! :) In the near future I'm planning to open a section on this site for transcriptions and scores, that will be downloadable for free.

For other news - I will soon get (finally) finished with the production of a  recording we did back in 2012 with Ronan Guilfoyle, Greg Burk and Carlos Ezequiel in both Paris and Basel. So I hope to have it released by early fall 2016!

And more - this summer will be the first ever Pescara Summer Jazz Campus, in the city (or near) of Pescara, Italy. I am very much looking forward to that, since I have been working on it for a year already, together with my friend Angelo Valori. I will be heading the campus and teaching saxophone, improvisation, combos etc. For the other teachers I can at this point announce Markus Niittynen (piano, combos) and Jussi Lehtonen (drums, combos), and there will be more for sure! The dates are from August 12th until August 22nd, and the students will have to pay ONLY for the lodging and the food (plus their transportation)! I will soon start taking reservations - so if you are interested... stay tuned!

I wish you all a fantastic summer! (Yes, I know, down is Brazil and ZA it is winter now, but from my perspective even that is summer! :))

Fall 2016: Holland, Jazz For Peace, Peter Hertmans, my dads passing

This fall I have had the pleasure of working with and meeting many great musicians and nice people. While holding my post at the Karelia UAS I cannot tour all the time (also for family reasons I have had to cut slightly the amount of concerts abroad), but even more I have enjoyed these opportunities I have had lately.

But October brought also some dark clouds over my family, when my dad left us, after a few weeks' illness. It was devastating and even when we had some weeks to prepare ourselves for the worst that could happen, it wasn't easy for any of us.
The funeral was held a few weeks later at the Honkanummi Chapel and the commemoration at my dad's house here in Helsinki. Our hearts are still heavy, but the life has to continue...Rest In Peace dad, you will be remembered !

We did 2 concerts on the same day. These photos are from the Royal Concervatory Hall. Hopefully I'll soon get also the audio recordings from these concerts. Will post more then!

John Ruocco is doing great job conducting this band. His sense of humour and wit is ever-present and he certainly knows what he's talking about!

Here is Visa Oscar Group playing their great set at the Jazz For Peace Gala Concert at Pressa in Oct 17th.
in November we had the great Peter Hertmans as our guest at Karelia UAS! Peter is a fantastic guitarist and well-trained composer who has worked with many many other fantastic jazz musicians. He works at the LUCA School of Arts in Leuwen/Brussels and we had the pleasure of having him as a teacher from Erasmus Exchange program.
Peter held master classes to our students, and we played a concert together at the Sirkkala Auditorium in Joensuu.
The students were pushed to their limits (and over!!) but the result was great!

Summer 2015

Hey everyone!

So sorry I haven't been too active in this field for a while. There's been quite a lot of changes going on recently within my family life, which has taken its toll. But now I'm happily back in Italy with my fantastic kids, and we're enjoying our stay here fully!

(The summer campus for this year was cancelled for several reasons, but I will start working on a new edition early this fall, and I'm positive there will be a better  organized and more happening campus coming up for the summer of 2015!)

Our trip here will cover a great part of Italy, starting from Milan and Venice, visiting Tuscany and Rome, and finally going to our beloved Salento for at least 10 days. In Salento I'll be performing with the great pianist and good friend Francesco Negro and the fantastic tenor saxophonist Martin Jakobsen, plus a whole lot of other great musicians. I'm very much looking forward to that - and as well looking forward to having a great time on the beaches of Salento (Otranto, Gallipoli, etc) with my kids!

In August I'll post more details on the performances and and projects for the fall.

Hope you all are enjoying the summer fully!

Thanks for reading,
Ciao,

Pekka

Difficult start of the tour...

Hey everyone!

During these past weeks me and my band, that was supposed to tour in Japan, confronted an immense load of s* coming from both the authorities/Immigration and also from some club owners. Both Carlos (Ezequiel) and Benito (Gonzalez) were denied (tourist) visas for Japan, and I tried 'till the very last moment, to get us Certificates of Eligibility, to apply for an Entertainment Visa from our respective consulates of Japan. However, there was not enough time for that, so both Carlos and Benito were left on the shore.

Last weekend I arrived at Osaka KIX International Airport, and was taken to an interrogation room for 4 hours. I would not be exaggerating much, if I said it was pure torture. They did not let me move for  more than 4 hours, and me, with my serious back problems, had to sit on this wooden bench without moving. They had gathered a whole bunch of 'evidence of my/our earlier activities in Japan'. And they had made up their minds, already in advance, to send me back. But I refused to believe that was the only option and tried to fight back as much as I could. With the help of Koyo Conservatory and Kosuke Sawa, they finally released me.

A couple of days later Tuure (Koski) was arriving at the same airport, and they used the same method- he was taken to that interrogation room (they didn't have the thumb-screws there, but otherwise the room could have been used as a medieval torture chamber). And they told him the same stories, but kept pushing obviously still even harder that at some point, after 4-5 hours, Tuure had to sign off the document of his deportation. Then he was let into the terminal - without passport - and no permission to move out from the building. They kept him at the airport 26 hours, before he was taken to the plane back home.
NICE JOB, JAPAN!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

I'll finish the story when I get home. Meanwhile- thanks for reading, be well!

Happy New Year!

2014 was a great year for me, with lots of new and fascinating experiences. I'll have a short look back and try to list at least some of the (mostly) musical events of the year.

Lisbon
Picture
Picture

January was mostly spent in teaching and playing with my students. In February I traveled to Lisbon, to play with my friend, the great guitarist Bruno Santos, and to give master class at the Hot Clube/ Escola de Jazz Luiz Villas-Boas. I had a tremendous time there, and got totally enchanted about the city. Such a great vibe, I'd love to spend there more time at some point in my life for sure! On our concerts at Hot Clube, me and Bruno worked with drummer Luis Candeias and bassist Antonio Quintino. We also played a Sunday afternoon jam at a cafe Tati, which turned to be really great! There we played mainly with bassist André Carvalho, Luis on drums and Goncalo Marques. A lot of fun indeed!

March- April was mostly just busy with teaching and planning new projects (I'm sure I miss some things here, so please excuse me in case that happens). One highlight of April was however attending a concert by the great Kenny Garrett at the April Jazz Festival. Me and my friend, guitarist Neff Irizarry also witnessed a fun, backstage piano battle between Kenny and the actual pianist of his group, Vernell Brown Jr.
Picture
A few days after, I had the pleasure of hosting Benito Gonzalez for about one week, here in Helsinki and also in Joensuu (at Karelia University of Applied Sciences-Pop/Jazz Music Degree Program) where  did some master classes and combos. The students loved him, and no wonder, he's a brilliant musician with a big heart!

We had 2 concerts together after returning from Joensuu. One at the KOKO Jazz Club in Helsinki, and another at MONK club in Turku. The band was really grooving! On bass we had Ape Anttila and on drums Jussi Lehtonen.

South Africa

In the end of June I left for South Africa for the annual IASJ Meeting in Cape Town, which was being held at the South African College of Music (part of University of Cape Town) ; and to perform and teach at the Standard Bank Jazz Festival/National Youth Jazz Festival in Grahamstown (as part of the huge National Arts Festival. We also had one night in Cape Town at the Straight No Chaser club, which was so much fun! The place was totally packed on both sets, lots of friends in the audience and the mood was just right! Thanks to Kesivan for arranging that night! This band was - and still is - really special, and both challenging and rewarding to play with! Partly based on my 'Hi-Fi Quintuplet', we have Nick Smart on trumpet (London/UK), Ronan Guilfoyle on bass (Dublin/IRE), Kyle Shepherd on piano (Cape Town/ZA) and Kesivan Naidoo on drums.

Here's a few shots from IASJ and Cape Town:

Italy

After coming home from South Africa, I left for Italy for about a month. First stop was Atina Jazz Campus , as part of Atina Jazz Festival in Atina, Lazio (near Frosinone). I was heading the campus and we had a great collection of students and teachers from Finland, Denmark, Italy (naturally), Portugal, Serbia, Brazil, Hungary... Such a great campus, and musically so far the most satisfactory of these camps. Everybody worked really hard and still the vibe was loose and creative! Looking forward to next summer! Special thanks to teachers Markus Niittynen, Peter Szendofi Carlos Ezequiel Dario Germani Ettore Fioravanti Marta Raviglia Susanna Stivali Pericle Odierna !

After the Campus we still played one short concert with Markus, Carlos and bassist Mario Mazzenga- presenting Miles' music from the 60's, as part of a serious Miles Davis presentation by Gino Castaldo and Ernesto Assante.
After Atina we drove to Salento (the very South of Italy, to have a little time off and also to perform with great local musicians (and also with the great Martin Jakobsen). The gigs were organised by the pianist Fracesco Negro, and we had a couple of different rhythm sections.

Back home...

In August I did a one-day trip to Stockholm, to play a concert with my old friend, pianist Mika Pohjola. We did the concert at the Finnish Church in the gorgeous Old Town  (Gamla Stan). It feels great to play duo every once in a while! We played a couple of my tunes, some Mika's tunes and a few tunes Chacarera tunes by Fernando Huergo.

September I spent mostly teaching and practicing, and playing with my students. Anyhow I did a weekend trip to Tallinn with my son Milo, for his fencing competition. Such a nice city!

Japan!

Picture
Picture
We had a 2-week-tour with Mike del Ferro on piano, Tuure Koski on bass and Ville Pynssi on drums.
Me, Tuure and Ville flew Japan Airlines via London, while Mike came directly from Amsterdam, so we met and rehearsed in Tokyo.

Our first gig was a small festival in Tokyo, called Ochanomizu Netsuretsu Gakkisai, organised be the Meiji University. On the same night we still dropped by in the famous Body and Soul club in Minami-Aoyama. Owned by a great old lady called Kyoko Seki, it is one of those places that has the right vibe for a jazz club. Me and Mike got invited to play a few tunes with the rhythm section of that night, Kengo Nakamura and Dennis Frehse who, except sounded great, were working that night with the well-established pianist Junko Moriya who was so kind to invite us on stage. After a couple of tunes also Tuure and Ville joined us, and we played some tunes from our repertoire.

The following day we were off to Niigata, to perform at the Jazz Flash which also a legendary club, with a long history. In some way, this felt like the opening night of the tour, and the audience really loved us. We also had a great party there after the concert, cannot really complain! Hope to go back soon!

Next day we traveled to Kobe, it took the whole day, but luckily that night was free. Next day we performed at Kobe Modern Jazz Club, organised by Dai Murata. What a brilliant night!

Bar Request/Kobe Modern Jazz Club. A fantastic night.
Following day we performed in Kyoto, at the Kyoto Blue Note, which is not part of the Blue Note-chain, but an old club
that has been working under the same owner and name since 1962. Small and quite cozy place, we played with a very good energy that night. After that we headed back to Tokyo, to meet some people and take care of business. Great dinners and lunches always in Tokyo! Next gig was at Jazz Club Someday in Shinjuku, which is quite a big place for a Japanese club, and also very well established. Unfortunately the owner hadn't obviously  taken care of his business, so there was only a few customers. But, blessing in disguise - one of them was a well-known Swedish jazz pianist, Ronny Johansson with his wife. Ronny played with us a few tunes, so we did have small jam session as well.
Picture
Mike and me and our friend Yasuhito Mori, the great bassist living in Sweden.
Next we were off to Wakayama, which is situated in Kansai Region, around one-and-a-half hours from Osaka. The trip took us much longer than originally planned, and we arrived finally at the club Desafinado around the time we should have been starting. Luckily the audience was very generous and waited good-humoured while we set up our gear and changed our clothes (something NOT to be taken for granted, especially in Japan!). Beautiful audience, we enjoyed very much playing there!
Picture
Cafe Restaurant Desafinado, a great place!
And off we go - heading now back North, and performing on the same night in Nagoya. We had (again) our luxurious 30 minutes at the hotel before rushing to the club..
Picture
Next day we had the chance to visit an ONSEN (hot springs) nearby. This photo is shot from there. So many parts of Japan are really incredibly beautiful..
In Nagoya we performed at Sunny Side which is a fantastic club run by Yuji Iwatani and his wife. Beautiful night, and almost everyone in the audience was a musician, I understood.
Next day we had to return to Tokyo for our hotel, and then continue to Mito, Ibaraki, for our gig that night. A bit of a stretch again, but we made it and had a great night at the Girl Talk which is undeniably the best club in the whole region. We had also some friends in the audience and it was wonderful to play there!

The following day Tuure and Ville flew home, and me and Mike stayed for one more day. We had a whole bunch of people to meet, really busy day... Last but not least we met the great composer, musician and sound engineer Seigen Ono. A great day!

Picture
Seigen, Mike and me having a dinner in a very 'local' place in Omotesando. Oishi desu!
Back home I was busy with teaching and scheduling new projects again. I did, however throw a quite-well-behind- birthday party, since I had turned 50 in September. That was so much fun!
I also played several concerts with my students towards the end of the year, and we worked really hard for those. I was supposed to go to Cuba in early December, but for practical reasons we postponed the appearance at the Festival Jazz Plaza in Havana, for December 2015.

2015

We are now already almost mid-January, and I am still waiting for quite a few confirmations for this first half of the year. But my plan is, besides teaching and writing and practicing, to
- give master classes and play some duo concerts with Benito Gonzalez in Spain and Italy (February)
- do a 5-day teacher exchange to Royal Conservatory in Den Hague
- do a tour in Asia with Mike del Ferro (+ a rhythm section for sure..)- including Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia (March)
- visit South Africa and perform and teach at the SAJE festival and Cape Town Jazz Festival, plus do some recordings there(March-April)
- visit Japan (May) for some concerts and business

Thanks so much for reading/going through all this! (not sure if I would've managed myself:)
I will post shortly more news, please stick around!!!!

Thank you!!

Hi everyone!

First I'd like to thank you for visiting my site! It's always a pleasure. Apologies for not having all the functions of this site yet working, but I will do my best to make this site look good and totally functioning.

After a couple of weeks in Japan (and before that a couple of really busy weeks here in Finland), I have finally some time to go through some photos, videos and contacts. I hope I'm able to upload soon some interesting stuff on this site, too.

Our tour in Japan was great. The line-up was Mike del ferro on piano, Tuure Koski on bass and Ville Pynssi on drums. We played 8 concerts around Japan, and also played a few tunes as guests at Body and Soul Jazz Club in Aoyama, Tokyo. Such a cool place- strongly recommended!

Some highlights from the tour:
*Kobe Modern Jazz Club / organised by Dai Murata: A great, warm atmosphere and a huge success! We enjoyed a lot playing there, definitely looking forward to going back!
*Niigata Jazz Flash: a very old, established club with great masters' autographs on the walls. Very nice audience, great mood, and a fantastic hang on location after the gig! Thanks to the master of the house and Mikio Inoue san!
* Ibaraki Girl Talk: A beautiful club in the (oddly) vibrant city of Mito in Ibaraki. Super friendly owners and a most welcoming audience!

Me and Mike del Ferro also had the pleasure of meeting many people in Tokyo, outside the actual concerts. There was many, but a few here to mention: Hiroki Sugita, Mr. OK Jazz Tokyo, Shigeko Sekiguchi, Seigen Ono, Atsuko Yashima, Yasuhito Mori and others. It's always fantastic to visit Japan, but this time maybe even more than usual! For me it was probably 12th (or 11th) time in Japan, and I'm already hoping to go back soon!

For future tours and concerts:
I'm right in the middle of confirming lots of different things for the spring of 2015, and even for performances in Cuba for this December (!). I will let you know soon...

Thanks again for visiting my site, and hope to see you here again!

Peace,
Pekka
